The Walkmen's 2008 album You & Me was, for me, like re-discovering a vague acquintance as a soulmate. I'd always been aware of them and The Rat had blown my mind, but i didn't really give Bows & Arrows much time to sink in, in hindsight, i can see that is something essential to the listening process with a band as deep and layered as The Walkmen.

You & Me has soundtracked so many night bus journeys around London over the last two years its a 'go to' for me whenever i find myself alone in the city seeking a quick and safe passage back to my flat. I really hope that with the announcement of a new album Lisbon, due in September this year, i'll have even more late night fodder.

Ariel Pink Live

Scala, Kings Cross - 15/06/10

Anyone who has followed the music press coverage and myth making surrounding Ariel Pink would be forgiven for imagining him living in a bedroom haze, surrounded by redundant, dust gathering games consoles, worn out VHS tapes and a shit load of vintage equipment. I picture him only surfacing to open his bedroom door and snatch the toasted cheese sandwiches his mother dutifully leaves out for him.

But tonight’s Ariel Pink is a fully formed performer, brimming with an alternative-universe-stage-school confidence that betrays his reputation as a lone traveller through music’s forgotten cosmos. At times he conjures the ‘drunk grandma in her best heels’ vibe of vintage David Johansson, the hair lashing intensity of eighties Ozzy Ozbourne and strangest of all, the troll like physical comedy of Bill Bailey.

He is funny, intoxicating (and obviously intoxicated) and whilst he is clearly daft as a brush, it’s easy to be swept along by the energy he and the band expend on behalf of having a good time. Throughout tonight’s set, the group mine just about every left of centre genre you can imagine, creating a disorientating, schizo feeling in the room, as if someone keeps turning the dial on the radio (or flicking the channel, considering AP’s clear love for forgotten TV show themes) streaming thirty second blasts of wild rock n roll, 80’s funk, sugary 60’s sunshine pop and pompous 70’s glam into the room, and that’s just the first song.

The man’s voice is pretty special too, when you listen to the record and hear all the strange vocal snippets that sound like samples, they’re actually all sang live by Ariel and the group, who bust harmonies like some kind of ‘Galaxy High’ version of Fleet Foxes. One minute he’s scaling the heights of his range on the prom night smooth Fright Night (Nevermore), the next conjuring Iggy with equal abandon on Little Wig, all the while never dissolving the music in parody or his persona into pastiche.

Two encores later the crowd have been treated to some choice cuts from new record Before Today (alas no Can’t Hear My Eyes or Beverly Kills) and plenty of fleshed out early recordings, the highlight of which, Kate I Wait, with its awkward time signatures tackled nobly by the group, proves the perfectly odd end to a memorable evening.

Women - Public Strain

Calgary art-punk troupe Women have FINALLY announced details of their second album, pitchfork reports.

It'll be released on August 23rd over here in the UK and September 28th in the US, unlucky.

Here's the sweet artwork, very reminiscent of Magazine and PIL and i know the band are big fans of UK post punk so here's hoping the aesthetic of the music follows suit...



That's pretty much all we know at the moment but we'll keep you updated as and when new tracks start to trickle through the cracks in the web and here's a link to a recent radio session the band did debuting new tracks on CBC.

New sounds - Wet Illustrated

Not much is known about these cats, they've recorded a single 'Born Stoked' with Fresh & Only's Tim Cohen producing and it's available for purchase on their rather rudimentary but lovely, Myspace.

We've got a stream of it below. I'll let you add your own superlatives but after listening to it a few times all i could think about was a water fight, not those horrid facebook organised mass events, that will no doubt soon be sponsored by Evian, but a good old fashioned, impromptu water bombing followed by the introduction of a hose and a few buckets and a lot of wet t shirts. That sort of thing.

Vaselines announce new album

Following a recent compilation ' Enter the Vaselines', Kurt Cobain's favourite band The Vaselines (lazy i know) are all set to release their second LP after a 20 year wait.

The band formed in Glasgow in the late 80's, lasting two impressive years before splitting on the eve of their full length being released.

Released on home-of-the-great-and-good Sub Pop, 'Sex With An X' is released on Sept 14th this year and they're offering a little taster for free download right here.

The free download is called I Hate The 80's and is a funny little slice of sing a long alt pop, a great little taster of what i hope is to come.

1234 Shoreditch Festival

Just over a month until this year's 1234 festival in Shoreditch Park so we thought we'd post a little reminder about the line up.

It really is great this year, ok, so the festival is no longer free, but its still a total steal when you consider the quality of the bands that Sean McClusky and co are now able to book.

Established US groups such as Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls and Wavves line up beside lesser known, up and coming UK talent such as Grave With No Name, S.C.U.M and art rock pioneers such as Vic Godard & Subway Sect.

The cheaper early bird tickets are sadly all gone but its still only £20 for a day ticket, miles cheaper than Reading et al and a miles better line up in Tally Ho's humble opinion!

Sonny & The Sunsets - The Hypnotist b/w Stranded 7"

Tally Ho favourites Sonny & The Sunsets follow up their awesome debut LP with a four song 7" on new label Future Stress Recordings.

With the same honest, rootsy song-writing that shone on Tomorrow Is Alright at its base, the new 7" somehow feels more intimate than previous Sonny releases. Girl on the Street and The Hypnotist both rely on folkie guitar flourishes and flute backing, creating truly psychedelic music devoid of fancy effects pedals or touched up vocals... as if we're being allowed a few brief flashes of the man behind the songs.

Highlight for this fan is Stranded. A cut from the aforementioned full length, its lingering, sinister guitar intro perfectly compliments the downtrodden, helpless tone of Sonny's lyrics.
